Send and read encrypted email
When the lock turns on, and what it protects.
Once you have a key, a lock button appears in the compose window. It switches on by itself when every recipient has a public key we can find. We look for keys from other Viremail users first, then in the recipient's domain key directory, then on a public key server.
If the lock cannot turn on, hover over it to see which recipient has no key. Ask them to set up OpenPGP and send you their public key.
Encrypted messages you receive show End-to-end encrypted. If your key is locked on this device, you will be asked for your password once to unlock it.
What is protected
- The message body and attachments: yes.
- The subject line, sender, recipients and dates: no. They are needed to deliver the email, so keep sensitive details out of the subject.
