Reviews: clicks, opens and unsubscribes
What the counts on the Reviews page mean, why opens are off unless you turn them on, and how unsubscribing works.
The Reviews page in Billing shows simple counts for the last 90 days. A full dashboard is coming.
Clicks
The button in each email goes through a short Viremail link, then on to your review site. That is how you can see it was used, and the email says so in plain words.
Mail security tools and chat apps open links on their own to check them or make a preview. Reviews counts these apart as Filtered clicks:
- a known link scanner or link preview (for example Microsoft Safe Links, Proofpoint, Mimecast, Slack and WhatsApp previews);
- a click within 10 seconds of the email going;
- three or more clicks within 2 seconds from different networks.
The link still works for them, so nobody is ever stopped. Clicked by a person counts each request once, when the page confirmed it ran in a browser.
We never keep the network address of a click, only a code that changes every day.
Opens (off unless you turn them on)
Counting opens means putting a 1 pixel picture in the email. In the UK and EU that needs your customers' consent, so it is off until you switch on Count opens, and Reviews asks you to confirm they agreed.
Opens are an estimate. Apple Mail loads pictures through Apple's servers as soon as an email arrives, whether or not it is read, so those are counted as opened by a mail app on its own. Gmail loads a picture once and keeps it. Clicks are a better measure.
Unsubscribes
Every review email has an unsubscribe link, and mail apps show their own Unsubscribe button for it. One unsubscribe stops every review request from your business to that address, straight away, including emails waiting to go. Their other emails from you, like invoices, are not affected.
Review posted
When you see a customer's review, tick Posted next to their request. It helps you see which requests worked.
Keeping records
Click and open records are kept for 13 months. When a person is removed from your People, their review requests go with them.
