Threads: your email as chatsNew

Read and answer your email in Vire, one chat per person. Type, press Enter, and it goes as a real email.

Threads is the second tab at the top of Vire. It lists everyone who emails you, one row per person, newest first, with a line from their latest email, how many you haven't read, and a clip when it has an attachment. When your latest email to them is newer, the line starts with "You:".

The lists

  • Primary: people, and anyone you have written to who hasn't written back yet.
  • General: newsletters, offers and mail from social sites (Promotions and Social together).
  • Updates: receipts, sign-in codes, deliveries and other notices.
  • Spam: mail in your Junk folder.

Slide the row under them for Promotions and Social on their own, Requests (people waiting in Screener) and your own mail folders.

A person sits in the list of their latest email. If a shop that used to send offers writes to you directly, it moves to Primary.

Reading a chat

Choose a person to see your emails with them as a chat: theirs on the left, yours on the right, one bubble per email, with a line for each day. Their emails that you archived are there too. The subject shows when the conversation changes. Scroll up for older emails.

  • Only the text of each email shows. Pictures, fonts and designs never load here, so nobody can tell you opened it.
  • The earlier emails a message quotes are folded away. Choose Show quoted text to see them.
  • Choose a file to download it.
  • Show original opens the email in Mail, exactly as it was sent.
  • Newsletters, offers and very long emails show as a small card with Read in Mail.
  • Opening a chat marks their emails in that list as read.

Replying

Type in the box at the bottom and press Enter to send. It goes as a normal email from your own address, with your signature, to the newest email in the chat (theirs, or yours when yours is newer). Shift+Enter starts a new line. Enter sends on phones too.

Above the box, Replying to shows which email you are answering. Choose Change to answer another recent conversation, or to start a new email with its own subject. A first email to someone takes its subject from the start of what you type, and you can change it.

Your reply goes to them only. Anyone else who was copied (CC) on the email is left out, and if they asked for replies to go to another address, it goes there. To answer everyone, use Show original and Reply all in Mail.

Right after you press Enter, your email shows with Undo for a few seconds (as long as your undo setting in Settings). Undo puts the text back in the box.

To write to someone new, choose the pen next to Search people and enter their address.

Spam stays harmless

In Spam the text of an email stays closed until you choose Show text, links are never clickable, and pictures never load. Replying asks first, because a reply confirms your address to the sender.

When the Shield has doubts about an email in any list, it shows a red or amber warning above it, and its links are not clickable.

Finding someone

Type part of a name or address in Search people. Lists and chats update as new mail comes in, when you come back to the window, and every minute while they are on screen.
