Import into and export from your VaultNew

Bring in codes from Google Authenticator and passwords from your browser or another manager, and take an encrypted copy with you.

Open the Vault and choose Import (or Vault settings, then Import). Everything you bring in is read on this device and encrypted before it's saved. Files, pictures and links never leave your device. Before anything is saved you see what will happen: what's new, what's already there, and anything that can't come in, with the reason.

From Google Authenticator

  1. On your phone, open Google Authenticator, open the menu and choose Transfer accounts, then Export accounts.
  2. Pick the accounts to bring over and choose Next. The app shows a QR code, or several if you picked many.
  3. In the Vault, choose Import, then Authenticator app. Scan each code with your camera, or take a screenshot and drop it in, choose it, or paste it. With several codes the Vault counts them for you ("2 of 3 scanned").
  4. Choose Review, check the list, then Import.

A single site's setup QR code works the same way, and so does an otpauth:// link (choose Authenticator link and paste one or more). Codes that use MD5 can't be imported, because the Vault doesn't support it. Keep the codes in your old app until you've signed in once with each code from the Vault.

Your Viremail sign-in code stays out of the Vault, even in an import. Keep it in an authenticator on another device.

From a browser or another password manager

Export a CSV file from your old app, then choose Import, Password file (CSV) and drop the file in. The Vault recognises these by their columns:

  • Chrome: open Google Password Manager (Settings, then Passwords), choose Settings, then Export passwords.
  • Edge: Settings, Passwords, More actions next to Saved passwords, then Export passwords.
  • Brave: Settings, Autofill and passwords, Password Manager, Settings, then Export passwords.
  • Firefox: open Passwords from the menu, choose the three dots, then Export passwords.
  • Safari and the Passwords app: on a Mac, open Passwords and choose File, Export All Passwords. In older Safari, File, Export, Passwords.
  • Bitwarden: Tools (Vault options in the apps), Export vault, format .csv.
  • 1Password 8: File, Export, pick your account, format CSV.
  • LastPass: Advanced options (Account options in the extension), Export, LastPass CSV file.

Sign-in codes in the file come across too, whether they're otpauth:// links or plain secret keys. Folders from Bitwarden and LastPass become Vault folders. If the same site and username appear twice with the same password, they're merged into one login. A different password is kept as its own login, so nothing already in your Vault is overwritten. Importing the same file twice adds nothing new.

Delete the CSV file afterwards. It holds every password in plain text. Delete it from your Downloads folder, empty the Bin or Trash, and remove any copy that synced to a cloud drive.

Export your Vault

Open Vault settings and choose Export. You'll need your account password, and we send a security email to your inbox each time, in case it wasn't you. Items in the Trash are left out.

  • Encrypted file (recommended): the Vault makes a passphrase of 6 random words and locks the file with it. Write the words down or keep them in another password manager: they're shown only once and never saved, and without them nobody can open the file, not even us. You can import the file into any Viremail Vault again (Import, Viremail Vault export).
  • Plain CSV file: for moving to another password manager. It uses Bitwarden's columns, which most managers read. You'll see a red warning and type a word to confirm first.
A plain CSV file isn't encrypted. Anyone who gets it, and any app that can read your Downloads folder or the cloud drive it syncs to, can read every password, code and note in it. Import it straight into the other app, not a spreadsheet, then delete it.
