Templates with smart fieldsNew

Save messages you send often, and let names and dates fill in by themselves.

A template is a message you send often, saved so you never type it again.

Use a template

  1. In a new message, type / at the start of a line, then a few letters of the template's name. Press Enter to put it in.
  2. Or choose Insert, then Template, and pick one from the list.

A template can also set the subject (when the message has none yet) and add people to To, Cc or Bcc.

Smart fields

Fields in curly brackets fill in for the first person in To, from your Contacts when they are there:

FieldBecomes
{first_name}, {last_name}, {name}Their name
{company}Their company, from Contacts
{my_name}Your name
{today}, {weekday}, {date+3}Today, the day of the week, or a date a few days ahead
{?Order number}Nothing: it is highlighted for you to type

Fields without a value stay highlighted. Press Tab to jump from one to the next. If you press Send with one still empty, Mail asks first. Type {{ for a plain curly bracket.

Make and manage templates

  • In any message, choose Insert, then Save as a template.
  • In Settings, Writing & sending you can make, edit, copy, sort into folders and delete templates.

Templates belong to your account only. Nobody else can see them.
